I have owned a large variety of cages and a large variety of animals over time. I can say with full confidence that this is easily the best quality cage I have owned.Size: A very large cage, make sure to look up the dimensions and get a grasp on the size of this cage. In pure cubic feet, this is probably the largest cage I have owned. I have had other mansions, which were taller and less wide, but this one probably still has a greater area.Quality: Compared to the other cages I have owned, this is a very high quality cage. Rather than being several panels, that you must attach often with cheap plastic hinges, this cage is actually preassembled in two parts, the top and bottom, with very strong metal hinges, it unfolds open, one sits on the other, and everything snaps into place with no plastic other than the bottom liner. The top snaps closed and gets screwed in by two easy to screw nuts, making this one of the easiest assembly's I have ever had, and the entire reason it was called a folding mansion. Although believe me, that doesn't mean it isn't stable. It is incredibly well built and stable, every piece fitting well and there is no imbalance here. My other mansion, "my first pets", tended to be top heavy and very unstable to move, this one does not suffer from those problems.The Openings: A bit more innovative than the atypical style, which is the odd loop the snaps and wraps around, this one has a large bar that crosses across the entire door. It is 100% better than the other opening, as you are not continually bending it. I also think it is a lot more difficult for an animal to break out of and easier to open too.The shelves: The shelves are the first point in which you will start needing to be concerned. They really just sit there, so they are in jeopardy of being knocked down fairly easily. All of the insides consist of metal bar grid stuff. In my case, I have a ground squirrel, which makes this environment almost perfect for his grabbing feet. For a ferret, however, I have heard many horror stories of their feet getting caught in these grills when they fall off. Many have been stuck, with broken legs, arms, and injuries, from this kind of cage. So as far as ferrets, I do not think this is a very good cage. You might be able to get the cage, and improvise new shelving on your own, and given the nice quality of the cage, it might be worth it. It might be a chinchilla friendly cage, providing them with no plastics from which to chew on. I can also see bunnies, sugar gliders, rats, and maybe a couple other types of animals doing well in this cage.Overall: So overall, for the squirrel, this was really the perfect cage. It is very well built, and I needed an environment he couldn't chew through. My two complaints are the shelving, which rather than clicking in, has to sit there and can be knocked up and then down, and the plastic bottom. I was expecting all metal, so seeing that was plastic leaves me a little worried that he might go at it one of these days. Still, it is one of the best quality cages I have owned, an is well worth the price under $200.

I bought this cage when I moved into my new apartment 6 months ago for my two chinchillas. It was apparent as soon as I opened the box that there was going to be issues. Several of the metal pieces weren't welded on properly which made it quite wobbly, and there was a crack in the plastic tray. I felt this was something I could just deal with since it held the chinchillas just fine. Over time however, 3 of the 4 wheels have completely fallen off. This makes it extremely difficult because I have to lift/roll on one wheel, then lean it on the wall to put the wheels back on and hope it stays. I would understand if I abused the poor thing, but I hardly ever move it, just to clean under it. I can't fathom why they have fallen off so quickly.In terms of overall design, There aren't many horizontal bars which makes it difficult to use for various cage accessories. I have found perches, for example, to be more stable when it's used with a horizontal bar. And while it is spacious, sometimes it is too much so. When I try to hang something from the top of the cage, most of the time it is just out of their reach. I also found I had to twist tie the shelves and ramps down, as it made a metal clanking ruckus when the chinchillas were walking around in their cage, never mind running and jumping in there. I also wished there was a wired bottom on the cage rather than just the tray, as it has a habit of creating more of a mess of their cage as well as my floor.So after 6 months of frustration, I am in search for a new cage. I hate to pay so much for a new one so soon (I like to get at least a few years out of them) but at this point I'm afraid it will tip and fall over.

The product was a LOT bigger than expected. It was a pain to put together, and you definitely need more than one person to do it. I got this for my two chinchillas, and they seem to like it a lot. The problem I have with it is that the bottom level, which I fill with shavings, is not conducive at ALL for holding them in. I have to sweep constantly. The other levels and the ramps are mesh, which is also a downside, because they can get their little paws stuck in it, so I put fleece over top of it. It IS a huge cage, and they do enjoy running up and down the ramps and around the bottom. Just make sure you have a big enough space for it.
