This was bought to help a middle school student not lose homework assignments- so much better than a backpack with one big catch-all/lose-some pocket. The pockets allow him to devote one space to 1-2 classes and keep homework papers from crumpling. Smaller pockets useful for change for library fines and writing instruments. Strap and fabric seems sturdy enough to last more than one year, and can hold the homework, lunch and even a laptop or tablet. Biggest problem I see is that can hold to much and get heavy, (I would not recommend this for a smaller student, I see those overloaded bags they carry and this only goes over one shoulder)
