4Different kind of sander
By R. Anderson
The wheel sander consists of ~ 4" long cylinder with bristles (steel/nylon in various grits) extending out from it. It is very useful to clean up rough sawn timbers and in finer grits to raise the grain.Raising the grain can give your pieces a pleasant 'tactile' dimension as well.If the rough sawn timber is too bristly, this tool can reduce to eliminate the bristles. It is good for removing surface stains, grit & grime prior to finishing. The tool is of Makita heavy-duty journeyman quality. Not a cheap throw-away.

5work horse
By Lyle R. Danuser
makita wheel sander is a work horse. no matter what application you may choose to use this wheel sander. I use it in woodworking to sculpt timbers. The wheel sander raises the grain of the wood. taking away the softer pulp wood between the grain.Givind you a weatherd or rustic look to your wood or timbers. its a pricy tool but has many uses. will also strip paint rust just about remove any thing on any surfaced. amazon and there supliers were very prompt with delivery very happy.

5Great specialty sander
By M. PRESTON
I bought the wire wheel for my Makita 9741 Wheel Sander. It is a quick way to open the grain or age wood in appearance. It works great on larger flatter areas but not so well into small recesses ( to get into tight areas I use a similar but much smaller wire wheel in a 1/4 inch die grinder). It's pretty much useless on tight grained woods like mahogany or poplar, but gives a great old and weatherbeaten look to more open grain woods like oak or ash. I have also found that I can make inexpensive pine or cedar look as if it sat in the desert sun for 50 years in a matter of minutes. Experiment with different types of wood till you find the results that you like. The abrasive nylon brush supplied with the sander may be useful for aging a painted finish, but is useless for aging bare wood. The sander itself has functioned flawlessly and wheel changes are simple to accomplish. This tool allows me to work on complex shapes such as moldings but as above it wont get into small recesses.
