Northern Industrial Bench or Wall-Mount Chain Saw Sharpener

For the price this is the best chain saw sharpener that I have found. I have tried the others that are the same price or cheaper, and believe me when I say that they belong in the trash. You would be better off hand sharpening if you choose something less. Item# 193020 from Northertool has the features that you see from the spendy models but not the cost. It comes with 3 grinding stones to allow many different types of chains to be sharpened. Angle #'s are on the base for consistent transfer from one side of your chain to the other. Overall this model is not made cheep, it is made to last and that is what I needed.

A step above hand filing, but falls short in major areas.

This grinder is a Chinese knock-off of a Oregon 511AX, while it is well made mechanically & capable of sharpening chains fairly well, there're several major flaws to the unit that needs to be remedied before it can even hold a candle next to a 511AX. There will be some ancillary cost along the way if you sharpen a lot of chains or cutting blades.First of all, who ever at Northern Tools that wrote the User Manual deserves a severe spanking! User Manual is not only worthless it is misleading in few areas, only 6-7 pages are used to cover operation & assembly and they are very sketchy. Further, it neglected to illustrate some important set-up procedures.Upon opening the box you'll find a lot of machining dust, I suggest you clean off all threads before starting assembly.Word to the wise: read the manual & set it aside. Yes, it is that worthless !! You're better off using the picture on the box.Secondly, User Manual has no illustration on how to properly "dress" the grinding wheel, which is "critical" to any proper chain sharpening. I end up down loading Oregon 511AX User Manual which has detailed step by step instruction on how to properly "dress" a grinding wheel.Consider down load Stihl USG grinder's manual. It has an illustration on how to determine the "Master Cutter" on a saw chain because the master cutter is needs to be sharpened first, while all other cutters need to match it's dimensions.Vise Angle illustration is very frustrating! It only talks about "Tilt", that's it. There were no illustration on which way to tilt for which side of cutters. Do I tilt up or down? for left or right cutters ?Again, Oregon 511AX's manual came to the rescue. There is a clean & concise diagram on how to set-up the tilt for various brands of chains. For example, Stihl RSF chains required a 10 degree tilt while the RMF & RM Series requires no tilt.Thirdly, vise angle clamp wasn't tight on my unit. I noticed a couple degrees of "free play". I set my vise angle at 25 & it'll shift to 28 degrees once chain is tightened. I discovered the "jaw compression spring" was too weak & doesn't have enough compression to hold the vise angle plate tight. Northern Tool tells me they have a bunch on back order so I'll get a replacement sometime in the near future.Ancillary cost: The supplied grinding wheels are very "soft" and does not last long, my 1/4" wheel lasted 5-6 chains before I noticed it was becoming smaller & smaller.This may not sound like a serious matter but it is! A soft stone will require more pressure to sharpen a cutter which means you will need to push down harder, consequently creating a lot of "heat" that will fatique metal prematurely. As a result, my cutters were frequently turning blue from excessive heat! Yet I know better to carefully "tap" the cutters rather than keeping a consistant pressure on it. I had to spend $45 for two Oregon cutting wheels (1/4 & 3/8), or risk burning out my Stihl saw chains prematurely. Now the difference is night & day, I sharpen my chains quicker & cooler.In conclusion, this unit has the potential to be a good reliable grinder but you might need two additional manuals in order to properly set-up all three required cutting angles: (1) Top Plate Angle (2) Vise Angle (3) Tilt Angle. Remember: all 3 angles must be set-up properly otherwise you are just grinding metals. (4) If you sharpen a lot, seriously consider a replacement grinding wheel; your chains will appreciate that very much.Also don't hesitate to call Northern Tool if you feel any parts are defective on your unit, I had a defective jaw compression spring right out of the box.
