The works are not very well made. I have another of the same and so far at each battery change something went wrong with the works. It would tic but the time would not change. This happened twice. The company did repair the clock but be prepared to spend money as this is a heavy clock to ship back to them. Save all you receipts.

My father has been asking for a ship's bell clock for as long as I can remember, but nobody ever got him one. They're difficult to find and if you do they cost upwards of $500-1000. Finally I bit the bullet and bought him this clock - it worked perfectly and I wish I had his reaction on video tape. He was stunned and so excited - he even gave me a big hug, and my dad is NOT a hugger. This clock was great and I'd recommend it and the seller to anyone.

The brass housing is heavy and well polished and face is well designed. BUT while the the Weems & Plath sales pitch talks about "best German ships bell movement" I suspect this description would offend many Germans.... it is a poorly finished plactic movement with a rough bell suspended over it.The Amazon website claims that this clock carries a "limited lifetime warranty." The literature that comes with the clock contradicts and says the warranty is for original defects only and limited to two years. I guess Weems & Plath realize the German mechanism will not last very long and do not want to stand behind it. Very surprising for a company that tries so hard to be thought of as a quality product provider.Its good looks will fit well into many rooms, and the soft bell sound is pleasant. This clock is not, however, suitable for a marine environment such as in the salon of a large sailing yacht. The works are in no way shielded from the air. Clocks made for a marine environment are sealed because sea air is corrosive.Buy it for home decorative purposes and you will be happy for a couple of years (before warranty elapses), not as a serious, durable time instrument.
