By Hathor
If you are looking for something to occupy your spare time, this is it. At the present time I am about 80% finished with this set. It is complicated. It is made out of thousands of matchstick sized pieces of wood. You receive a large set of full sized printed template sheets, a sturdy building board, a clear assenbly sheet, which you do the actual building on, a sturdy little cutter that uses ordinary single edge razor blades. This cutter is extremely sharp and should not be used by small children. This kit is extremely complex and delicate. It is definately not a childs toy.

Excellent kit. Must have a lot of patience and a liking for detail. I read somewhere that it takes about 300 hours to complete (couple hours a day every day equals about 5 months!). That estimate is a little conservative because if you want a really nice looking finished product you need to do a lot of sanding and minute adjustments with an exacto knife as a lot of the sticks are a little warped (not totally necessary but I'm a little OCD about things). I had to break out some c clamps a few times too so as to have a nice flush joining of parts due to the warped pieces. Overall I'm very satisfied. Well thought out kit and easy for anyone to understand.

By Eric Houg
I was looking for a project that I could do in my relatively limited free time. I had done some of the Lego architecture kits and the idea of spending 200+ dollars to put together the Robie House(FLR's poorest specimen) did not really sit well with me. In the recommended section I saw these Matchitechture kits. I looked through them and decided on the Notre Dame kit as I had been there and thought it was the best looking of the bunch. That being said, let me just say that I am of mixed feelings about this kit. In a departure from my usual reviewing policies I will start off this time with the bad and go back to the good. The bad1) This kit is HUGE!! if it doesn't take me the better part of a year to do this I will be surprised. That is assuming I spend a few hours each week working on it. Something that is not bloody likely with my schedule. I STRONGLY suggest that you start with something simpler before jumping into any of the larger sets.2)The plans are fairly basic and don't include measured lengths or angles which would have made it a lot easier for more experienced wood workers. Although I did finally figure out that the coded sequences at the side are there to help you figure out how to finish out the more complicated sets.3) In line with that, I had thought that most of the longest dimensions would be populated by full length "Micro Beams" that I would not need to cut. Not so, you will spend a baffling amount of time trimming 1/8" off every beam you install. I could probably just let it go and use the full length beams but the obsessive compulsive in me refuses to accommodate.4) The cutter provided is terrible. It does not have any sort of backstop or measuring marks and is extremely cheap and badly put together. If you have to replace the razor in it get ready for trouble. It would have been extremely easy for the manufacturer to provide a MUCH better cutter at little or no cost but that seems to be outside their scope.5) The "Micro Beams" themselves are fairly poor quality and no special care seems to have been taken to their straightness, flatness or other consistency. The wood used is extremely cheap and even with a good cutter you tend to fray the ends which then need to be sanded. But, because of the poor quality and small size you end up with a really odd angle.6) The glue provided appears to be old and have sat for a while. It comes out initially as a clear material which is just some chemical separating from the glue after having sat for a time. Once you get past that thought it is fairly good glue and works well. You only need a small amount to hold pieces together.7) You will almost certainly need several different grits of sandpaper which aren't included in the kit for some baffling reason. The little blue cutter that you see on Amazon is actually not as good as the provided cutter as it tends to compress and round off the ends it cuts. You can use more to trim whiskers that the cutter in the kit leaves. Now the good.1) This kit is HUGE!! It will definitely keep me out of trouble for the entire year, if not more2) Considering the investiture of time vs. the amount of money I paid this is definitely a bargain.2) When I finish a section, even one that is nothing but a triangle of glued lumber, I feel like I have accomplished something.3) I am hoping that the finished product is quite spectacular.I know that this is a lot of bad and not a lot of good but I think you need to know what you are in for and I really don't think the other reviews are giving you a good impression of this kit. If you have a lot of free time to spare and want something that can eat it up this will definitely do the trick. If you want something that will make you feel like you accomplished something when you're finished, this is it. But, if you have little free time and little patience, look at another project.
